Have a Little Respect for Privacy!

I’m a very private person. Although I freely share my thoughts, ideas, and emotions on certain things, I have boundaries when it comes to family and relationships. Occasionally, I share it with my best friends but other than that, I just don’t see the need to tell everyone everything.

Another thing regarding the violation of privacy that annoys me most is when people take my personal things without my permission. I’m sure some of you can relate to this. Imagine someone at your house, grab your photo albums from the rack and start flipping through it without asking you. Imagine someone using your laptop or computer when you step away, then browsing the Internet with your Facebook profile still logged in.

At one point, I felt that maybe I was over-thinking it. I even asked myself, “Are there people out there who are actually okay with people taking/ using their stuff without their permission? Am I being sensitive?” But apparently not. I put it on my Facebook status regarding this and all the responses I got were saying that it’s actually rude to take/ use people’s belongings without permission especially laptops/ phones where people actually store their personal data.

There’s one more thing that I consider a violation of privacy as well; reading someone else’s chat on messengers, emails on computer screens, and texts on the phone when they’re not the intended recipient.

I’m not sure if you have experience someone looking over your shoulder when you’re reading your text messages on the phone. In fact, I consider it rude as well if the person reading your messages even when your phone is placed on the table. I will normally look away from the phone screen if I notice the person is texting unless he/ she actually show me the messages. Also, reading someone’s private chat on messengers is just plain rude.

Surprisingly, there are people who are doing just this and I have no way of knowing what they were thinking when they “trespass” people’s privacy unless I ask them. I don’t want to put a blame on them or even accuse them because there might be a possibility that they are not aware of what they were doing. Therefore, I’m hoping that if those of you who are reading this post and come to realize that you’ve been trespassing without realizing it, it’s time to stop.
