Resolutions? What Resolutions?

Typically, most people will have the tendency to have some resolutions made by year end and started getting excited during New Year so they can “execute” their resolutions and start checking off the list. After two weeks, they won’t even have a list to check off since they probably misplace it somewhere. Their resolutions are never heard of after that until year end.

In my entire life, I remember precisely twice that I made my New Year resolutions and since then I stopped. I noticed that I’ve always work harder than I planned and achieved more than I expected. Resolutions will only constrain me to sticking to what I’ve planned.

My advice is to not be bothered with resolutions. Make goals, not resolutions. What’s the difference?

Resolutions are something you’re planning to do. It focuses on “what” you’re going to do. For example, losing weight.

Goals are something you set to accomplish. You focus on the results you want and work on the “how” as you go along. For example, achieving my ideal weight of 50 kg by October 2013. That’s the goal and you also determine the “how”, for example, eat less unhealthy food/ junk food and exercise at least 3 times a week.

Follow-through is the most important element in achieving what you desire. If you make resolutions for the sake of making it because everyone else does, your heart does not desire it. When you set goals, you will need to ask yourself the following questions:
  • What do you want to accomplish?
  • Why do you want to do it?
  • How are you going to make it happen?
  • When are you going to achieve it?
So, ask yourself these questions and start setting your goals. And you know what’s the best thing about setting goals? You can set it anytime you want, not just once a year.

Happy New Year and I wish you achieve all the goals you set for yourself in 2013 and many years to come.
